Meet our dual-qualified acupuncturists in Adelaide

Our acupuncture Adelaide team includes two highly qualified dual practitioners:

  • Dr Karen Chan (Acu, Physio) – a rare dual-trained acupuncturist and physiotherapist, one of very few with this level of qualification in South Australia. She has worked with clients since 1999, and has a special interest in fertility and women’s health.

  • Dr Voula Tep (Acu, RMT) – an experienced acupuncturist and remedial massage therapist who has worked as a clinician since 2011. She particularly loves to assist with musculoskeletal and sporting conditions.

Both are fully registered with AHPRA and the Chinese Medicine Board of Australia, and are members of the Australian Acupuncture and Chinese Medicine Association (AACMA).

What is acupuncture?

Acupuncture is the traditional Chinese medicine or art of healing, which has been successfully practised for more than 2,000 years.

Today, acupuncture is used as a holistic, evidence-based practice for many health conditions and diseases, treating the root cause rather than just the symptoms.

It is a natural and holistic approach, which focuses on prevention and ongoing management of illnesses.

Acupuncture aims to normalise the flow of energy (qi) and blood throughout the body by stimulating specific points along pathways called meridians, stopping any unwanted blockages. These blockages usually manifest as potential symptoms or conditions (reference link).

What should I expect during an acupuncture Adelaide treatment?

Our acupuncturists in Adelaide begin with a comprehensive assessment of your symptoms, medical history and lifestyle. We then use traditional Chinese medicine forms of treatment, including:

  • Fine needle insertion (acupuncture)

  • Moxibustion (warming therapy)

  • Cupping therapy

  • Chinese herbal medicine prescriptions

These natural treatment techniques help re-establish the natural flow of balance and energy (qi) in your body.

Frequently asked questions

  • Pricing varies between clinics and depends on the length of your session. At our Adelaide acupuncture clinic, our pricing is as follows:

    • Initial appointment (50–60 minutes): $110

    • Follow-up appointment (30–45 minutes): $93

These fees include assessment, treatment and any additional techniques your acupuncturist may incorporate. If you have questions about pricing or health fund rebates, our reception team is happy to help.

  • Many people ask us this! While both involve fine needles, they arenot the same.

    • Acupuncture is a comprehensive and holistic treatment approach for the whole body, mind and spirit, with a history spanning thousands of years.

    • Dry needling is a modern technique focused on muscular trigger points and mostly used to treat pain conditions only.

If you’d like to delve deeper, read our Chinese medicine practitioner Dr Karen Chan’s dry needling vs acupuncture explainer blog.

  • Most people feel little to no discomfort. You may notice a mild tingling, heaviness, or warmth — these sensations are normal and usually brief.

  • Usually only the area being treated needs to be exposed — often arms, legs or your back. Most treatments require minimal undressing and are always done with appropriate draping to keep you comfortable. If you prefer, you can wear loose clothing that allows easy access to these areas.

  • This depends on your condition, its severity and how your body responds. Many people feel improvement after 1–3 sessions, while chronic issues may require a longer treatment plan. Our acupuncturists in Adelaide will discuss an appropriate treatment plan with you during your first appointment.
