Blending Eastern and Western knowledge for a whole-person approach

Struggling with chronic pain, stress, fertility issues or a health condition that isn’t improving? You’re in the right place.

At our acupuncture Prospect clinic, we offer a holistic, evidence-based approach to your health. Our experienced acupuncturists are dual therapists, combining Traditional Chinese Medicine with Western approaches, so you gain the advantage of dual knowledge, skills and approaches to your health.

We commonly see conditions including musculoskeletal pain, hormonal imbalance, digestive issues or emotional stress. At our acupuncture Adelaide clinic, we can develop a personalised acupuncture treatment plan to suit your specific needs.

Meet our dual-qualified Adelaide acupuncturists

Our acupuncture Adelaide team includes two highly qualified dual practitioners:

  • Dr Karen Chan (Acu, Physio) – a rare dual-trained acupuncturist and physiotherapist, one of very few with this level of qualification in South Australia. She has worked with clients since 1999, and has a special interest in fertility and women’s health.

  • Dr Voula Tep (Acu, RMT) – an experienced acupuncturist and remedial massage therapist who has worked as a clinician since 2011. She particularly loves to assist with musculoskeletal and sporting conditions.

Both are fully registered with AHPRA and the Chinese Medicine Board of Australia, and are members of the Australian Acupuncture and Chinese Medicine Association (AACMA).

What is acupuncture?

Acupuncture is the traditional Chinese medicine or art of healing, which has been successfully practised for more than 2,000 years.

Today, acupuncture is used as a holistic, evidence-based practice for many health conditions and diseases, treating the root cause rather than just the symptoms. It is a natural and holistic approach, which focuses on prevention and ongoing management of illnesses.

Acupuncture aims to normalise the flow of energy (qi) and blood throughout the body by stimulating specific points along pathways called meridians, stopping any unwanted blockages. These blockages usually manifest as potential symptoms or conditions (https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/30335320/).

What should I expect during an acupuncture Adelaide treatment?

Our Adelaide acupuncturists begin with a comprehensive assessment of your symptoms, medical history and lifestyle. We then use traditional forms of treatment, including:

  • Fine needle insertion (acupuncture)

  • Moxibustion (warming therapy)

  • Cupping therapy

  • Herbal medicine prescriptions

These treatment techniques help re-establish the natural flow of balance and energy (qi) in your body.

Common conditions we see at our Prospect acupuncture clinic

  • Chronic pain, arthritis and migraines

  • Insomnia, stress and anxiety

  • Depression and mood disorders

  • Digestive issues, bloating, reflux, pain and bowel disturbances

  • Respiratory conditions, such as bronchitis and sinusitis

  • Skin conditions, such as acne, eczema and psoriasis

If you’re suffering from a specific condition and wondering whether acupuncture and Traditional Chinese Medicine can help, please don't hesitate to contact us for clarification.

What’s the difference between dry needling and acupuncture?

Many people ask us this! While they both involve needles, they are not the same. Acupuncture is a complete therapeutic system with thousands of years of history, whereas dry needling is a modern technique focused on muscular trigger points and mostly used to treat pain. If you’d like to delve deeper, read our Acupuncturist Dr Karen Chan’s dry needling vs acupuncture explainer blog.
